They take a grasp onto a book, pull it out, and keep it for themselves, with no wanting to return it. This may seem like 1984 fantasy, but around the United(?) States, and the whole world, it happens almost every day. Book banning. In the famous Supreme Court case Island Trees v. Pico, the High Court said “With respect to the present case, the message of these precedents is clear. Petitioners rightly possess significant discretion to determine the content of their school libraries. But that discretion may not be exercised in a narrowly partisan or political manner.” But, without any respect to anyone’s rights, many schools have decided to ban books because, as said by the Court in Board of Education v. Barnette, they want to "prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion." This ignorance of the Constitution must stop, and stop now. For more info, go to http://ncac.org/literature. Quotes “Banning books is an extreme disservice to our readers. Not only does it hinder tolerance and acceptance, it also limits the information exchange Americans hold dear.” -Michael Gorman “If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all..." -Noam Chomsky “Unauthorized student publications shall not be distributed on school property.” Check it and you’ll see: On page 43 and rule 18 of the Student Code of Conduct, it says that “Reasonable administrative regulations as to the time, place, and manner of distribution shall promote orderly administration of school activities by preventing disruption, but shall not be designed to stifle expression.”. So, all in all, you’re saying that you won’t allow distribution of non-school-made materials, while at the same time, contradicting yourselves and saying you won’t “stifle expression”? First of all, disallowing students to distribute (without disruption) materials made by them, without school government intervention is a VIOLATION of the First Amendment and Abe Fortas’s call that students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate,” (see Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District). The good thing about this though is that you guys don’t enforce this harsh rule and protecting free speech. But wait, if you don’t enforce it, why’s it still in the SCOC? Censored. By Mr. Man Sadly once again, we've come to a bad end. There was a rather nice article here. and then..... It got censored. courtesy of some people of course. Even so, I'm still happy enough not to mention their names. Just their objections. Life is cruel, isn't it? Almost awesome. The good thing is that Barack Obama is president, as somebody with a brain has finally stepped up to the plate. Buuuut, there are some things that keep this from being very great, such as: He supports ethanol subsidies. How’s this bad? Because as more corn goes into cars, less goes into people’s mouths, which means less corn, more demand and higher food prices. Plus, more trees are cut down to make cornfields. And this stuff is supposed to help the environment? Make your mind up on warrant-less wiretapping already!
