Uh huh. --- will ***notice*** issue info --- some news --- It's time to write the intro. Yep, we're still here, even after the Admin's calls for us to stop. Yep, I'm still going to write the intro. Yep, opinions will still be voiced. Yep, I'm still using the word "yep". And anyways, it time to clear stuff up. First of all, we aren't even trying to compete with the school's official newspaper, we're saying and printing things they don't or won't. We are doing our best to tell it as it is, and if we fail, don't hesitate to tell us. Speaking of that, on to the second thing. You can freely tell us what you think of SN, through talk, passed or badly crumpled notes, flyers, email, or whatever. If you include your name (or nickname, or pen name, or whatever) we'll print it, if you don't include any name, we won't. Okay? Okay. And a third thing, since our print run is minute compared to the school paper's, share this copy! More people than copies made will see it, and money, along with trees will be saved. Enjoy the third issue, and give us feedback, dude. --- You're Young, so Auschwitz is "adults only" http://www.spectacle.org/695/ausch.html The above link goes to An Auschwitz Alphabet, an online exhibit created in 1996 about a Holocaust death camp from the online magazine The Ethical Spectacle. Well, that's if your computer doesn't have censorware on it. You see, if you use any of the district's computers, you'll be stopped by SmartFilter, a censorware product made by Secure Computing. You'll be greeted by a little page saying the site was blocked. Why? For "Violence". Sure, it contains some content that can be called "disturbing", but that doesn't make it unsuitable. Anybody that goes to that site is more than likely doing it for research and for mourning, so what makes it "unsuitable" for a grade schooler to visit it? Just because it talks about violence does not make it violent. It does not advocate violence. It is used to It is used to EDUCATE people about Hitler's atrocities. And, if it's blocked as "violent", than why not stop teaching about the Holocaust? Another day, another time somebody throws common sense and cyber-freedom off a cliff. Not surprising though. Not surprising at all. Since 1996, web blocking programs ("censorware") have been known to block sites with ideas they don't agree with. If we deny access to a site like this, we are growing a new breed of ignorant youth who don't know as much about Hilter's evil deeds as much as others do. Children were executed at Nazi death camps, but we won't even allow children of now to learn about these horrors. The world is bad. Very bad. But that doesn't mean we can't learn about it. We can't just shelter everyone. It's a huge disservice to do something like that. If you want to see An Auschwitz Alphabet without being blocked, go to http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/camps/auschwitz/alphabet/ausch.html You'll also find info on the censorship of AAA. Sources: http://www.spectacle.org http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/camps/auschwitz/alphabet/index.html --- Enjoy the Silence On November 19th, one teacher said that the article "Seriously, people." could not appear in the second printing of Issue Two, where it first appeared. His reason was that it wasn't suitable for the maturity level of the school. I do disagree with that, as homophobia may be a touchy issue, but I just got SICK of people calling others gay, homo, etc. as a insult. I wanted to tell people something. And with the 55 first print copies distributed without a hitch (although the last 5 were seized.), I guess I got out fine. But there's another story.....the Admin doesn't want SN to be distributed on school property, which doesn't comply with the basic rules of the First Amendment. Schools may place restrictions on the place, time, and manner of distribution, but a blanket banning of all distribution isn't legal. Neither is prior review on non-school-sponsored newspapers (Burch v. Barker, 1988). We don't want SN to be squashed, which is what could, just could, happen, but if the going gets too rough, SN will be given to people outside of school. This is absolute waste of time, puttering around, rooting out all these "unsuitable" and "risky" things, while there's awful bathrooms, bullying, and other chaos sprouting at the outskirts. It's even worse because SN isn't doing anything really wrong, we're just practicing our rights to free speech, and we're not disrupting anything. So, the moral of this fiasco is that messing around claiming this and that is wasteful, unfair, not needed and there is more important things to be done. --- Opinions about Issue Two "It's better than issue one." -him "I really like it!" -her "It sucks." -innocent bystander "It isn't suitable for the maturity level of the school." -that guy --- School spirit. Uh huh. I've been told by many people that I've got 'have some school spirit." But how can I be proud of here if they curtail our rights to suit their own interests? As I said in "Enjoy the Silence", the school is wasting their time doing these kinds of things while bigger problems exist. In this situation, you're quite hard-pressed to make me happy about this place. And what is "school spirit" anyway? Sure, it can involve rooting for the home team during a football game. It can involve just liking this place. But school spirit is more than that. It's about improving the school. It's about telling people what YOU think about certain issues and making sure they get fixed. It's about making the school free or almost free of bullies. It's about balancing freedom with rules. But, as I can tell, here, rules are going over freedom big time. It's almost as bad as last year, when you couldn't even find any time for peace. Sure, the old Principal is gone, but it really hasn't seemed to get better.
